Students will look at a website and use the tips to decide if it is bogus or not.

Procedures:

*pull out tips, develop procedures; build new page titled lessons instead of tips; look at directions for creating a page

Discuss with the students after using the buILder how they can use the following tips to locate the information they need to critique the site.

Following are questions that can be addressed with students.

Why do I care?

  1. looking for good authentic information not bogus or misleading sites
  2. reliable information

What to look for? Clues to authenticity? Where do I look?


  1. when was it last updated? (bottom of page)
  2. what is the URL? (.net, .org, ~, .com, .gov) truncate to find home page
  3. Is their a contact person? (usually email at bottom of page or somewhere visible)
  4. Are there alot of pop up ads? (can be an indication of bias)
Who created the site?
  1. person of authority?
  2. is it a personal site?
  3. is there a bias?
  4. what was the purpose of site?

so you are not duped when looking at a website. Remember to look for:

  • date
  • URL
  • pop up ads
  • email
  • design
