Students will look at a website and use the tips to decide if it is bogus or not.

Learning Goal:

  • to gain knowledge and tips on how to evaluate websites
  • to become better critical thinkers and analyzers


Direct your students to the following link Would you ban DHMO? An option would be to bookmark this site on each computer.

Students should stop at instructions page and the teacher should hand out a worksheet. This worksheet can also be found in the buILder lesson on the "instructions page". This worksheet requires studets to find important information from each website. Thie worksheet corresponds with the DUPED slide at the end of the PowerPoint presentation and on the "Worksheet and PP" page of the buILder lesson.

Once the students finish analyzing the three websites ask them by a show of hands "Who would ban DHMO?" I think you might be surprised at the results you receive.

Then use the PowerPoint (also located on "worksheet and PP" page of buILder lesson) to demonstrate some of the important components on each website that demonstrated they were not that reliable. Also it also gives students clues on how to check for reliability when surfing the web. (A free PowerPoint viewer is available for download.)

The PowerPoint looks at the following:

  1. When was it last updated? (bottom of page)
  2. What is the URL? (.net, .org, .com, .gov, ~) truncate to find the home page)
  3. Is there a contact person? (usually at the bottom of the page or somewhere visible
  4. Are there many pop up ads? (can be an indication of bias)
  5. Who created the site?
  6. Is it a person of authority?
  7. Is it a personal site? (look for the ~ in the URL)
  8. Is there a bias?
  9. What is the purpose of the site?
  10. Remind students: to avoid being DUPED when looking at a website, remember to look for: Date URL Pop up ads Email Design
